As a dean of students in my former role, my main challenge was attending to all our students at once. The university has over 40,000 students taking physical classes and another 20,000 in online courses. Attending them at once proved challenging, and therefore, we doubled our efforts by leveraging technology such as Teams and different online platforms to reach them. I also occasionally walked into random classes to check up on our students.

Even though I am the Assistant Dean at the moment, I have worked closely with the outgoing provost and therefore have a clue what a provost’s day entails. A provost gets to work early, responds to emails since the last night, reviews materials such as the academic affairs council agenda, and prepares for the day’s meetings. The morning is spent meeting different people, such as the dean, president, and director of graduate studies. I have been working at this university for seven years now, and therefore, I can’t say that there is any challenge that I may not know of unless it was hidden from the other staff members and for obvious reasons. The main challenge that I foresee in this role is that this will be my first time as a provost, and therefore, I may have to adjust first. Fortunately, I was close with the outgoing provost and thus learned many things from him, which will help me in this job.
9. How Do You Stay Motivated In This Field?
I love academia but love when my students and the entire university succeed more. I am therefore fueled by my desire to ensure that my university achieves more awards and that most, if not all, our students compete well in the job market and flourish wherever they find themselves after school. My motivation also comes from my colleagues, who time and again have pushed me to be better at whatever I do.
10. Mention A Time That You Failed In This Role And The Lesson You Learned
I don’t always leave much room for failure since I am thorough and tactical with my work, but I have had several learning experiences. While serving as the assistant dean of students, we may have pushed the students too much to the point of threatening unrest. We quickly realized that we would fail even though our reforms and policies were for their benefit and went back to the drawing board, this time around involving them more. We managed to come up with policies that all factions accepted. This experience taught me the importance of student involvement.
11. Why Do You Believe That You Are The Most Suited For This Role?
I have served in several administrative positions at this university and understand some of its ins and outs. I am well acquainted with different processes and have built a good rapport with the staff, which will definitely foster teamwork. I also interacted well with the students as the assistant dean and therefore, won’t need to build a rapport with them over again. Lastly, I am a hard worker who values results, and my record at the institution speaks for itself.
12. What Is Your Greatest Achievement?
I have made great achievements in academia. However, the greatest was winning the World’s Best International Law Professor title, which saw me meet and interact with some of the greatest minds of our generation. I also got international recognition from several sources, including law journals and Tv stations. I attribute this success to my staff, colleagues, and students, who are always my main source of motivation. I hope to achieve more, especially as the provost.
13. This Is An Administrative Position. Can You Tell Us About Your Leadership Style?
I love a leadership style where everyone is involved, right from the students to the university’s top management. While serving as the dean, I worked closely with the student representatives and the top management alike, and we achieved great success. I believe that leadership is all about service, and therefore, everyone’s voice should be taken into account despite the positions they occupy in the university. I will do the same if I get this job, which I am definitely looking forward to.
14. Why Do You Think You Think Has Made You Succeed In Directing Administrative Departments?
I believe that the main reason why I have succeeded in directing different administrative departments is people’s involvement. I do not normally work alone but ensure that everyone has a voice and takes part in management. I also think critically before making decisions, weighing all the available options and going back to the drawing board if I discover any new piece of information. I am positive that these strategies will help me succeed here.
15. Do You Find Budgeting Challenging?
Budgeting is always based on future predictions, which makes it challenging. Even though I have had a successful experience with budgeting, I believe that its uncertainty is one thing that cannot be waived off. There are also different forecasting techniques, making it hard to be totally accurate. All in all, using past data and making small adjustments always work the magic.

The first thing one needs to do before or when communicating with their audience understands them. Putting up a good team starts at the selection stage. One should only go for people who have the same goals or can be rallied towards achieving different set objectives. They should also be able to contribute fully to the team’s activities and be at their best always. Teamwork doesn’t require lazy people or those that have to be pushed to go out of their way. Lastly, a team should be diverse. Diversity fosters the exchange of ideas and breeds better results.
20. Do You Know The Difference Between You And The Dean?
Yes. Even though some of our roles may collide, I understand that the key difference between us is determined by the college or university areas we oversee. As a provost, I will be in charge of the entire school’s education offerings while the dean only oversees a faculty and academic staff, keeping it at the departmental level. Deans coordinate activities in specific divisions, while as a provost, my job extends to the entire university or school, making me more of an academic officer.
21. Your Resume Says That You Have Been A Dean Before. Could You Please Tell Us Some Of The Qualities Required For A Provost And Dean Position?
Both provosts and deans require leadership, analytical thinking, and communication skills. Leadership skills help both professionals inspire change and manage the staff, ensuring that the university succeeds. In contrast, analytical thinking skills are required to come up with good policies that will foster quality education. On the other hand, communication skills ensure that information is properly passed between faculties or the student body.
22. You May Be Required To Sit In Interview Panels. What Will You Look For In A Candidate?
I have been in several interview panels before and therefore know what to look for in a candidate. First is the grooming and etiquette, which will definitely give a good or bad first impression. If one groom and carries themselves well the moment they step into the interview room, they are already halfway to the job. I then consider their grasp of knowledge in the particular area, which is often elucidated by how they answer the questions. People who have a good understanding of knowledge are often confident and clear. I also consider their demeanor and when we have several equal candidates, maybe the level of experience.
23. Where Do You See Yourself In The Next Five Years?
In the next five years, I will be in this institution, serving students, staff members, and the entire university. I have always wanted to be a provost and have not thought about what is next after this. I may decide to apply for a vice-chancellor position or pursue academia independently, either as a senior professor in an Ivy-league college or as a writer and consultant. All I know is that I will be contented with where I will be.
24. Do You Believe That Your Experience Has Prepared You For This Role?
Yes. My experience has definitely prepared me for this role. I have been a law professor for ten years now and headed the faculty at one point. I was also a college principal till recently when my term expired. I, therefore, understand what it means to lead a large academic institution and can do the same for the entire university. I have also closely worked with past provosts, which assures me that I will perform if given a chance.
25. What Is Your Greatest Strength?
I believe that my greatest strength is my ability to work with different people and lead several teams. I normally allow people to be involved in deciding on issues affecting them, which has yielded fruitful results. I also have excellent people skills that will enable me to thrive in team settings. I can manage expectations, motivate others and generally rally them towards a common goal.
