  • Putting the folded items into plastic covers and marking them
  • Maintenance of inventory of all linen and clothes that are coming and returning to customers or guests

3. What Are The Qualities That A Laundry Attendantneeds To Be Successful?

I believe this role needs great organizational skills to manage the load. One should be good at their job in order to be successful. He or she should do proper sorting of laundry and treat the stains as per requirements without any damage. He should also know how to operate machinery as per the laundry requirements including the functions of the machine. Also, the Inventory should be well managed because there will be days when there will be a lot of to-do and mistakes can happen.  Most importantly, if there is any machinery mishap, one should have backup solutions too.

4. What Major Challenges Did You Face During Your Last Role? How Did You Manage Them?

In my previous role once, the washing machine broke down and there were a lot of laundries that were pending. I panicked and immediately informed my supervisor about the problem. Since I was new, I did not know that there were backup machines too. I used those backup options till it was fixed. I made sure that my tasks were not affected due to such technical faults and guests did not have to worry about their clothes too.

5. Describe Your Daily Routine As A Laundry Attendant?

After reaching work on time, I start by sorting the clothes into colored and whites. After this, I sort them as per the stain and other requirements it may have. For example, clothes with oily stains need to be washed separately after taking out the stain properly. As I work on stains, the washing machine will be doing its job. Once done, I will fold the dry clothes and ensure that all clothes can be sent to their respective places.

6. Describe Briefly About Your Experience?

I did my internship in a hotel uptown where I got a chance to perform in the housekeeping department. The first few days were all about learning but later I realized that my skills were really being used in the department. I enjoyed being in charge of laundry tasks and I worked there for 2 years. I gained knowledge related to detergents and other chemicals that are used in the laundry system. I also got knowledge regarding commercial laundry equipment as it is a whole new different world if you compare it with residential equipment we all see at our homes. My supervisor was a great teacher who introduced me to so many ways how to remove stains from different types of fabrics since I had no idea about this before.

7. What Kind Of Strategies And Mindset Are Required For This Role?

In order to perform well in this role, I believe that attendant needs to have great organizational and management skills. You need a lot of information on treating fabric and how to improve its life too. You are not only responsible for doing laundry but you need to manage the whole inventory system too so that you can keep a track record of which item left your premises and what is coming through. I do believe consistency and patience are the keys here because one wrong move can damage the fabric overall and you might lose the customer too.

8. What Is The Biggest Challenge You Foresee In This Job?

I think the challenge is always the stain!  People spill some really odd items on their clothes that it gets really tricky to take them out. I know it is very challenging and gives an opportunity to learn too but then you cannot learn on someone else’s linen that you have to return in the next 24 to 36 hours.  With the concept of fast fashion now, the laundry challenges are too great because new fabrics are being introduced, and to make sure they are clean, we need to test out so many things at our end too.

9. How Do You Stay Motivated At Work?

I like the repetitive sort of work because it puts my mind at ease while working too. I like focusing on myself and my skills post work so I like this kind of setting at work. No stress at work keeps me motivated to explore more options for myself in the world.

10. Describe A Time You Failed In This Role And The Lesson You Learned?

While I was doing my internship at the hotel, I had to deal with silk sheets that had strong wine stains on them. It belonged to a film crew who needed those sheets urgently. Their manager kept pressurizing me to do it earlier and I came under pressure and poured some extra oxygen bleach on it to speed up the process. It left some major fabric fades from that area and I could not sort it. The customer complained to my supervisor. Though it was sorted later I did learn that I should not come under any pressure that could spoil all my work. Ever since I always make sure that I take appropriate time in doing all laundry tasks and don’t over-rush them.

11. Why Do You Feel You Are Qualified For This Role?

I believe that I have the skills for a role that gives me an edge to feel qualified. I can administer a laundry setup and I have the physical stamina to move the bundles of linen too. I can carry weight up to 75 lbs. I also have good communication and organization skills that help me in performing all my tasks as per detail and speed with accuracy. I also have knowledge about different types of fabric and its requirement.

12. Share With Us Your Greatest Achievement

In my previous role, I have gotten a chance to operate linen feeder, sheet folder, towel folder, and table linen ironer machines as per my duties. I have also worked closely with the supervisor in controlling all and monitoring the cleaning supplies and reducing the waste.

13. In Your Experience, Tell Us Which Clothing Item Should Never Be Washed In A Washing Machine?

There are a few delicate items as per the fabric that cannot be washed in a group. For example, foam pillows or sports gloves cannot be put into a washing machine since they can damage other pieces of clothing.

14. How Do You Ensure That You Do Not Any Mistakes In This Job?

I believe everyone makes mistakes but all we can do is avoid them. I make effort in staying focused at work and double-check my work from time to time. When I sort clothes, I do the task double to make sure that there is no wrong piece of clothing going into the washing machine or in the hand-wash category. I also avoid all sorts of distractions at work like a mobile phone and a TV screen that can deviate my eyes into something else.

15. What Is Wash & Fold Service?

Basically, it’s getting your laundry done by professionals. Many people have subscribed to such services that save hassle and time. A basic service includes a drop-off service too. Mostly this service is charged as per the weight instead of items pieces. It does not have to be only regular clothing always, one can choose miscellaneous items like blankets, pillows, or anything that does not fit into a home washer or dryer due to size.

16. What Are The Different Styles Available In Laundry Sinks?

There are 3 major types of laundry sink Freestanding, Wall Mounted, and Drop-in. They are great to handle loads of pre-washing tasks like soaking.

  • Freestanding: As supported by the 4 legs, they are easy to install the item and look more like a bathroom vanity instead of just a washtub.
  • Drop-in: These include a soaking pan, basin rack, and tray where one can perform tasks like soaking and spot treating before putting clothes into a washing machine.
  • Wall Mounted:  These are convenient options for a laundry room and you can install them as per your height requirement.

17. What Is The Most Common Chemical Used For Treating Deep Stains? How Is It Used?

In my experience, I have always preferred using oxygen bleach to remove common stains. As per my preference, I choose a powdered formula. One can choose according to their own comfort level. In order to use it, the chemical is mixed into hot water instead of cold water. The amount of chemical used or ratio that should be used for taking out a stain should be as directed by the product label. Just make sure that you stir the bleach and dissolve it before putting any cloth in it. The water should look a little cloudy after mixing.

18. How Do You Take Out Grass Stain For A Pair Of Pants Or Shorts?

Grass stains can be removed with the help of vinegar. Make sure that you soak only the dirty portion into the vinegar instead of the whole fabric. The average time required should be around 30 to 40 minutes but if the stain does not go away in this time period, we can repeat the process till the stain is gone.

19. Few People Have Sweat Stains On Their Clothes. How Do You Cater To Those Types Of Stains?

This is one of the most common stains in summers, especially in men!  I have taken out some tough sweat stains with the help of aspirin. Yes, simply crush 2 to 3 aspirin and mix it into the water, almost half a cup. The fabric should be soaked into the mixture for a minimum of 2 hours or a maximum of 4 hours. Simply wash it and then throw it in the washing machine like normal clothes.

20. How Can You Add Brightness To White Linen?

It is a common problem with white because, with time, white does become yellow and looks dull. One of the basic methods is to add oxygen-based bleach into warm water and soak linen in it. The ratio must be as per the instructions provided on the package. You can keep linen in the mixture for a minimum of 8 hours or maybe overnight in some cases. Wash the linen with hot water mixed with white vinegar.  You can also use laundry bluing in your wash. It is one of the oldest laundry products with proven results. In my experience, I also recommend drying white laundry in the sun because sunlight has UV ray that helps in whitening too.

21. You Accidentally Left A Red Sock In Your Whitewash. What Is Your Next Step?

Dye bleeding happens! In order to remove the stain from clothes, I will use oxygen-based bleach with regular detergent. Most people confuse it with chlorine bleach because this will damage the fabric of your whites. The temperature of the water is going to depend on the type of fabric that needs assistance and so does the cycle type in the washing.  Once one cycle is done, I will check the load again till it is entirely gone. Once they are clean, the whites can go dry or air-dry as per the requirement.

22. Just Like Stains, Sometimes Odours Are Hard To Remove Too. What Is Your Experience?

Yes, a few odors are hard ones but with experience, you can take these out too. My go-to ingredients for such tasks include baking soda. You can dissolve one cup of powder into four cups of hot water to make a mixture. This solution can be added to cool water and cloth can be added to the solution. The minimum duration for soaking will be around 3 to 4 hours or maybe overnight for the safe side.

23. What Is That White Residue On Washed Clothes?

It happens when powdered laundry detergent is being used when it’s not being dissolved completely. In order to avoid it, pour the detergent into the empty washer before putting clothes in it. This will give some time to dissolve in water first. For dissolving purposes, you can use hot water instead of cold water or you can shift to liquid formulas instead of powder detergent. If you can residue left on the clothes, rewash the clothes in the hot water without any detergent or some chemical. You can also add white vinegar that will release the white residue from the clothes.

24. Towels Usually Lose Their Softness. What’s Your Procedure To Soften Them Again?

One of the major reasons for losing softness is due to detergent or fabric softener buildup. You can first run the towel in hot water in a normal cycle. You can also add white vinegar to the cycle before adding any detergent. This will remove all residues that are in towels.  To avoid scratchy towels, use less detergent in the load because it leaves residue. For Towels, always use hot or warm water and do not overcrowd the washer.  Sometimes it’s due to hard water too. For this, install the softening system for water that will help too.

25. What Is Your Process To Remove Beer Stains From Linen?

These are the most common stains in the hospitality industry. Sometimes, it can be taken out with the help of hot water on the fabric but if the liquor is mixed with some colors then it’s another task. I use a white paper towel on the stain first and then put the linen under cold water. After getting it wet, I will add rubbing alcohol and wash the linen again. Once the stain is gone completely, it is better to wash it as per the fabric requirement.
