I started as a resident advisor in 2013. My main responsibilities were to respond to the needs of residents. I also created and implemented education and social programs to strengthen the residential community. I also counseled students on personal and academic concerns.  On the duty, I also performed several administrative duties including incident reports, room reports, and check-in and check-out attendance timings as well.

To perform well in this role, one must have to be an authoritative figure because if you are lenient then students might be breaking the rules easily. During my tenure as an assistant on campus, I had to deal with several students who were difficult. These days it’s common for students to use drugs due to academic pressure. One of our residents was involved in such activities and I gave a few warnings to him regarding it. I also tried to arrange a counseling session for him but he was adamant about his choice. I informed his parents about the situation so that they can be part of the counseling session as well. Somehow the student got to know about this parent being involved and he threw the worst tantrum on the floor that other students got scared. He was rushed to the hospital to calm him down as we were afraid that he could damage his mental health. In discussion with other assistants, I came to know that he suffered abuse at home and that is why when he came to know about his parents being involved, it triggered him so badly. I learned that I should always check with other team members before any such matter to avoid these episodes that could turn out to be dangerous for the student himself.

It is common to be fearful of new chapters of life and a new environment is one of them. As per policy, new students are given orientation and information regarding guidelines and schedules to follow.

I have free time on weekends and I spend that time with my friends and family. I like playing soccer and tennis with my friends. Sometimes I take part in on-campus sports facilities and it gives me a chance to engage with the students of all semesters.  With my family, I take my kids to a nearby amusement park or a lake, depending on the weather and their mood.
