My name is Arthur Millerand I’m a licensed prosecutor. I am excited to participate in this interview because I’ve always desired to work in the High Court. I earned my law degree seven years ago from an accredited law university. A few months after graduation, I started working at a magistrate court in my home city. I have worked in three other magistrate courts in different cities in the country. 2. Why Do You Want To Be A Prosecutor?
I grew up seeing my mother being abused by my dad. The fear of what society would say if mum reported my dad to the authority made her persevere the abuse. I would see how my mum suffered from mental illness and became depressed. This drove my desire to become a prosecutor. I have dedicated my life to helping the innocent find justice and to see the guilty getting convicted of their crimes. I have a law degree and I want to use the knowledge I have acquired in school to ensure that we have a safe society free from crime.
3. What Are The Roles Of A Prosecutor?
A prosecutor has many responsibilities such as preparing criminal cases for trial, handling appeals and screening possible criminals. A prosecutor is also responsible for advising and instructing counsel in court. They liaise with police officers, court staff, law enforcement agencies, and criminal justice agencies to get efficient evidence regarding the case of the potential criminal. Their main focus is to ensure that the offenders are punished fairly.
4. What Qualities Make A Good Prosecutor?
A good prosecutor should understand the needs of a community, have good reasoning skills, and ability to speak well in public. He or she must have excellent research, communication, and reporting skills for him to function well in the courtroom.
Prosecutors must have the ability to analyze details, determine information, and understand the context of witnesses and lawyers. Also, most of the obtained information is very complex and will require the prosecutor to perform adequate research and think critically regarding what he or she is working on. For a prosecutor to be effective in his role, he must possess excellent organizational skills to help them access his clients’ records fast. Computer knowledge is also key for it enables the prosecutor to keep track of the court schedules, hearings, appointments, and other job-related meetings. Additionally, solid logic and reasoning, and time management skills are also important in this role.
5. What Experience Do You Have That Relates To This Role?
I have been in this field for four years now. During this time, I have gained a lot of experience in representing victims in the courtrooms, interviewing witnesses, performing legal research, and reading through the reports of the police to plan how to go about each case. I have also been preparing criminal cases for trial, handling appeals, and screening possible criminals.
In addition, I have also developed essential skills such as research, communication, reporting, logical reasoning, and time management skills to help me work efficiently. The prosecutor must bear in mind that time is very critical in this career. He or she must stay on track during researching, gathering information, or compiling paperwork as well as duringcase-related meetings, hearings, and mediation.

8. Explain How You Will Build Trust With The Witnesses
I will listen to them without interrupting and only speak when they are done. I will work hard to understand their world better as well as show them an honest interest in their information. This will provide them with enough room for them to express their opinions. I will also inform them how the law protects them hence making them speak up.
9. As A Prosecutor You Will Have A Lot Of Case Files To Take Care Of. How Will You Keep Track Of Your Files?
I am aware that a prosecutor cannot afford to be sloppy. Losing or misplacing just any document could damage their credibility and their clients’ ability to earn a clean slate. That is why I remain organized at all times. I use Excel and appointment tracking software to stay on top of things. I also arrange my files in properly labeled folders.
10. This Role Is Quite Demanding. How Much Time Can You Commit To This Role?
I understand that this role is demanding. However, I am passionate about helping the innocent get justice while the criminal gets convicted for their crimes. It is the most satisfying thing that I want to see because it can result in a clean and safe society free from crime. 11. How Will You Develop Professional Relationships?
Effective Communication and active listening are some of the important skills that help in forming successful relationships. Having understood this I ask my clients many questions when getting to know them. I thoughtfully listen to their answers. Additionally, I paraphrase their question while responding to them to prove that I understood their concerns. Also, I work hard to show respect to all my colleagues, judges, clients, etc. I believe that it is easier to work with people when you show them respect.
12. Describe Your Daily Routine As A Prosecutor.
I begin my day by checking my emails and voice messages to see if there is anything that I need to respond to before I can embark on my daily tasks which include:
- Investigating a law offending case brought across by reporting, complaint, or a suspect who surrenders.
- Participating in cross-examination of the suspects in court during the judicial process.
- Presenting the main points of indictment at the court during the trial after the accused is interrogated by the judge.
- Assisting and taking over a private prosecution
- Guiding the enforcement of the decisions regarding the criminals
- Participating in the state’s civil affairs
13. Briefly, Explain The Difference Between Public Law And Private Law.
Public law involves the relationship between individuals and the government. It consists of rules governing the relationship between people and government. Examples of administrative law, criminal law, and constitutional law. Public Law focuses on protecting the public interest. The penal sanctions involved here are exacted from criminal activities such as imprisonment, death, or fines. This branch of law regulates a harmonious relationship between the state and its citizen.
Private law refers to laws that guide the relationships between private individuals. It comprises the rights of private bodies/ people in their relationships among the either. Examples of private law include equity and trust, contracts, property, torts, family laws, and succession. Private Law aims at protecting only private interests. Penal sanctions involved here include payments, specific performances, and injunctions. This branch of law seeks to secure the private interests of people in the community.
14. What Does Beyond Reasonable Doubt Mean In Court?
Beyond a reasonable doubt is the legal burden of proof which means that the evidence and arguments provided in court by the prosecutor affirm a conviction in a criminal case. The prosecutor is responsible for proving that the suspect is guilty beyond all reasonable doubt. He or she convinces the jury that there is no other explanation to explain otherwise rather than what is presented on trial. To be precise, reasonable doubt is the highest standard of proof used in any court of law. However, if the judge has a reasonable doubt regarding the suspect’s guilt, the suspect cannot be convicted.
15. As A Prosecutor, How Do You Prove Reasonable Doubt?
As a prosecutor, I would investigate and gather evidence including testimonies to prove that the offender is guilty. I would use all legal avenues to pursue the truth to ensure that I prove beyond doubt that the suspect has a case to answer.

16. Kindly Take Me Through The Three Standards Of Proof
The three standards of proof include clear and convincing evidence; preponderance of the evidence; and beyond a reasonable doubt. Beyond a reasonable doubt is the highest standard of proof on whether the defendant is guilty or not. Clear and convincing evidence means that the evidence presented by a party in the court trial must have a high probability of being true. A preponderance of the evidence means that both parties argue their case and the evidence provided by one party seems more likely to be true.
17. What Is The Presumption Of Innocenceas Applied In The Court Of Law?
Presumption of innocence is a component in the court system that states that the suspect is innocent until proven guilty. It’s also regarded as a human right in a court of law. The suspects can only be regarded as guilty when the prosecution team proves that the suspect is guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law.
18. What Are Your Strongest Points That Can Help You Perform Well In This Role?
I have very solid research, am keen on details, and have analytical skills that help me to perform my roles effectively. I can understand complex information from witnesses and lawyers. This enables me to obtain important evidence against the offenders with ease. I also have excellent organizational skills that help me to access clients’ records fast. I am well aware that misplacing any file can alter the whole process of judicial and cost the prosecution team.
Additionally, my great computer knowledge and excellent time management skills enable me to keep track of the court schedules, hearings, appointments, and other job-related meetings. I therefore never miss any deadline.
19. Highlight Your Weak Point As Far As This Role Is Concerned.
I am a dedicated prosecutor who works hard to ensure that the innocents get justice and the offenders receive the punishment they deserve. This makes me overwork myself a lot in looking for evidence to back my points in a court of law. However, I have realized this is a weakness and I am slowly learning how to trust other prosecution team members. As a result of delegating tasks, I am even becoming a good team worker and hence being able to work more efficiently.
20. Court Processes Can Require You To Work Under Tight Deadlines. Do You Have The Ability To Work Under Pressure?
Yes, I can work under pressure including working for extended hours especially when I want to obtain crucial information from witnesses. I remain calm and patient when dealing with witnesses since I don’t want to seem as if I am pushing them to provide information. However, I am learning to be persuasive to witnesses to ensure that I get the information that I need in time so that I can prepare my evidence without much pressure.
21. Why Do You Want To Quit From Your Current Role?
I have gained enough skills and experience from my previous role. Recently, I have also earned a law degree that has exposed me to more knowledge regarding prosecution. I now want to take a bigger challenge where I can utilize the knowledge and skills that I have acquired.
22. How Can Your Former Workmate Describe You?
I believe they can refer to me as a committed and a person who is easy to work with. I have had a good relationship with my colleagues because I believe that teamwork is a key to successful working as a prosecutor. I also respected every opinion that came from any of my workmates. I am a person who is keen to detail because I believe that even the mirror details that one can ignore can alter the whole court process.
23. Where Do You Want To See Yourself In 5 Years From Now?
I want to be a person with deep expertise in this field and probably hold a higher position than a prosecutor. My main focus is to see justice being accorded to everyone. I believe that the worst mistake that can happen is to set free a criminal and deny justice to the innocent.
24. Which Environment Do You Consider Ideal To Work In?
I prefer to work in an environment where cases are not manipulated or interfered with. I believe that corruption is one thing that can destroy the society that we live in. I also value an environment where justice prevails without being interfered with. Last but not least, is that I consider an environment where those in higher ranks do not intimidate their juniors. I believe I will thrive in my roles here because, from my findings, I can get this environment here.
25. Can You Work Overtime Or On Weekends?
I will prefer to work on weekdays. However, I am flexible to work any other time as may be required of me.
